It might be an oversight from my side, but when I do Edit Block from reference, I don’t see how I can go back to the original drawing.

Make sure that the block list is visible (View - Toolbars - Block List).
To edit the main drawing again, double click on "*Model_Space" or click on "*Model_Space" and then the button "Edit Block".
This definitely needs a more obvious solution.
