FS#387 - Export to pdf fails if same file name used as one previous, no alert and File menu becomes disabled
In File>PDF Export save a file with the same name in the same place as a previously saved pdf file.
Issue 1
Note that there is no alert to indicate that an attempt to overwrite is being made.
Then use the close preview button and navigate to the top panel file menu.
Issue 2
The usual drop down menu does not work. All other drop down menus do work.
Issue 1 is reproducible and will be fixed.
I'm unable to reproduce issue 2 here.
I've taken another look at the second 'File menu does not work' issue and found another way to evoke the problem.
Open QCAD and check the top drop down menus, they all work.
ASIDE- Note that to focus on a menu and show the drop down it needs a left click on any of the menu headers but thereafter, if the mouse pointer is moved to another menu header it drops down on mouseover. To clear the last drop down menu from view it is necessary to left click away from the menu panel, say in the drawing area. (This is really an aside, it may be as designed. Could behaviour be timed such that mouseover terminates when mouse pointer is away from the menu say for 1 second?)
Minimise QCAD and bring it back to screen again. Now try the File menu. On my latest update Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64 using the Unity (compiz) interface with QCAD in the Launcher panel the File menu does not drop down when left clicked. Curiously, if I move the mouse pointer down, as though the menu was rendered, and then move the mouse pointer away and left click in the drawing area, I appear to start the menu item under File (even though it is not visible). I can, for example show the Open Recent sub menu, by moving the mouse pointer vertically down below the File menu header, even though the File drop down menu is not visible.
I can reproduce this behaviour consistently without opening a file.
If I keep minimising and bringing back to screen I get spurious top menu behaviour. Some menus open on mouseover, some refuse to open when clicked. I have not observed any particular pattern to this further erratic behaviour, i.e. I cannot detect any consistent pattern of degrade during the minimise/display cycles.
Issue 1 has been fixed for the next release.
Issue 2 looks very much like a bug in the window manager that is being used (or possibly Qt in combination with that window manager). We don't really have any detailed control over how menus work as this all happens on a lower level than where QCAD operates.
One additional factor that may be in play here is the 'Unity' interface in Ubuntu. It makes the top left corner of the screen a very busy place and presents menus in a context sensitive way in the top panel. E'g' open Firefox and upon mouseover of the top panel a context sensitive menu appears for Firefox. Similarly most other applications exhibit the same behaviour. QCAD retains it's top menu embedded within the application and it does not appear as a context sensitive menu like most other apps.
No idea if relevant or not just passing on my own thoughts of another possible cause.
I have found another application that uses it's own embedded top menu and does not use the context sensitive approach of Unity. It is LibreOffice3 and comes as default these days with Ubuntu. It can be minimised and displayed without any erratic behaviour to the top panel menus.
