qcad not hatching

Hi All,
I have installed qcad on SUSE 10.0 and seem to be having some sort of issue in letting it know where the patterns are for the hatches.
I have set the correct path /usr/share/qcad/patterns in the settings but after I draw a rectangle and try to fill/hatch it, nothing appears to happen. I use the sequence exactly as in the manual. First, draw the rectangle, then hatch, select window, draw selection window so rectangle is selected, proceed to next menu using -> and then try to either solid fill or hatch. Neither of which work.
Also, the hatch patterns are displayed but I cannot get a preview of them.
What have I done wrong? Is there somewhere I've forgotten to set the correct path? apart from the application preference screen?
Thanks
