Deleting Intersected Entities

I'll show my ignorance here:
Say you draw a line with a midpoint and then a circle with it's centre on that midpoint. How can you then select the bit of the line within the circle to erase it? Is it possible to designate new endpoints on an entity at intersections and then delete the sections you've designated?
