Is there a preffered method of adding 3d capability to qcad. Sketch-up?

This depends of course on your specific application. For building designs, SketchUp might be a good choice. Otherwise anything that imports 2d DXF files should work (try the data exchange via DXF first, not all DXF implementations are complete).
