A couple of presales questions (not pointed but pertinent)

Do you have a question you want to ask an existing QCAD user about QCAD and what you can do with it? Do you want to know if a particular feature exists? This is the place to ask.

A couple of presales questions (not pointed but pertinent)

Post by TtfnJohn » Mon Jan 26, 2009 8:40 pm

Both QCAD and VariCAD came with my distro, Mandriva 2009, and trying both I have found that QCAD is more of what I'm looking for. Of course, I didn't understand the differences between the Community Edition and the Pro Edition.

I've tried the demo and it works quite nicely except for one problem which may be pertinent (there's that word again!) So, here goes.

1. The Community Edition appears to have some serious problems with QT4 and KDE4. There are crashes which logs report as probable incompatibilities. Are there any known incompatibilities with with QT4 and KDE4 in the pro edition?

2. The Demo can't save. Reading the posts I believe this may be a conflict with the Community Edition, paths and so on. Should I remove the Community Edition before installing the Pro edition? (Mandriva's Control Centre makes this easy and quite complete. should it be recommended.) The Community edition saves files quite well.

One comment that I do have to make is that if I relied on the Community Edition to decide whether or not to use the Pro edition I wouldn't be considering purchasing the Pro edition. The Community Edition needs updating to overcome some of the mysterious failures and crashes with point back to incompatibiliy with QT4 and KDE4. Or recompiling, which many be easier. It also needs the the "scale" bars present on the X and Y axis of the Pro edition which doesn't reduce the value of the Pro edition any while providing, in my opinion, an easier path to understanding the program for raw newbies like me.

I can't recommend the Community Edition as is to anyone which is sad given the polish and ease of use I find with the Pro edition.

All that said, congratulations on a well built and compelling product!

Thanks in advance.

The QCAD community edition binary is provided by the people who make and maintain your particular Linux distribution, so this might be a problem.

This should not be the case. I cannot imagine that the community edition in any way influences the installation of the Demo or Pro version (although there are people suggesting otherwise).

Thanks for the feedback.
