I think the convention of right-click for "meta" (of the object clicked-on) is pretty well-established in application UI's - could it be an option please? (I didn't even realise right-click did the same as pressing Escape - which is a very easy way to do "back out")
A context-sensitive menu is obviously quite complex to code (I guess you need to define/derive the likely sets of "modify" operations based on the object type that's selected, but it's likely to be really handy for quick access to whole-object modifications/.
