[solved] "Entity is not a line, arc, circle or ellipse"

Post by cave.dweller » Thu Feb 25, 2016 9:21 pm

I imported an SVG file and am attempting to alter it by cutting and joining some of the lines.

When I choose the Divide tool from the Modification Tools menu, then hover over the lines I want to alter, they don't turn grey. When I click on them, I get the error "Entity is not a line, arc, circle, or ellipse". I've seen this error when trying to modify text - the solution was to Explode the text objects, but when I try to Explode the lines in my SVG file, it has no effect on their Divide-ability.

So if a part of an SVG file isn't a line, arc, circle, or ellipse, then what is it?
Or, just as good - how can I convert an SVG's parts into a collection of lines, arcs, circles, and ellipses?

(Sorry if this has been answered - I Googled the error, in quotes, and found nothing)

Please:
- indicate the exact version of QCAD you are using (see Help > About or QCAD > About QCAD)
- indicate the QCAD Edition you are using (QCAD Professional, QCAD Demo-Version, QCAD Community Edition)
- attach original drawing files (DXF, DWG, SVG, ...) if appropriate

Please be as specific as possible in describing your problem, so we can help you efficiently. Thanks.

Thanks, Andrew. I guess I should know that by now.
(Qcad 3.12.8.0 - Professional Trial - SVG attached)

I found a way to accomplish my goal, albeit not a very satisfying one. Not sure what I did differently, but when I tried again, I was able to get the selected entities to Explode. The curves in the file were turned into a large number of very short line segments, which then I could select en masse and delete where needed.

So I'd say this is a combination of Operator Error and Feature Request. Or is there a better way to import/convert SVG's that would result in entities Qcad can alter directly?

Here's the file I imported. When I Explode the outline, any curves get converted into lots of short straight line segments. It would be nice to be able to convert these to arcs, then be able to Divide where needed rather than selecting and deleting all the unwanted short segments.

Hi cave.dweller,

Just an idea to get it faster done ...
... I would:
Select the contour which need to be altered,

explode this selection

launch the tool - "Polyline / create from segments",
click the contour and 1 Polyline will be created,
then use the "Divide" tool to cut this polyline wherever you need it,
Select the unwanted parts and delete them at a single blow ... done!

Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.
