Newbie to QCad but not to CAD

Post by thornuk » Mon Aug 28, 2023 10:48 pm

Hi, I've just joined the QCad community, having had to change the CAD program I use as the previous one no longer runs on Windows after the XP version ! I used to teach secondary school pupils using AutoDesk's AutoSketch, and Tech Soft's 2D Design, so I'm not a newbie to CAD.
However, after trying many alternatives, I've settled on QCad, it being the optimum between intuitive use and powerful facilities. This latter means it is not entirely intuitive, so I've come for some help !
I noticed, when drawing out the ground plan of the house I recently moved to, that there were two tabs on the right of the drawing area. One was Property Editor, and the other Layer List. Whilst trying various things I managed to dismiss those tabs. I can still access them individually,. but I'd like them back as tabs. I've searched the manual without success.
Can anyone point me in the right direction ? Many thanks.
Thornuk (aka PeterB)
Best regards,
PeterB

Hi, and welcome to the QCAD forum.

See menu View
Or see menu View .. Toolbars and Widgets
Or right-click on the menu bar or in an empty space of a toolbar.

To toggle the visibility of the Property Editor type the shortcut key sequence 'GP'.
First hit the 'G' key, release and then hit the 'P' key.
For the Layer List use GY.
There is also a toolbar 'Widgets' that controls the visibility of 8 widgets, by default located at the right side.

If you suspect that you moved the widgets out of view then see:

Many thanks for your reply.
I noticed in your reply to gemini the you said, "What is simply possible is to arrange it as a vertical tab widget and then the tab itself sticks out."
That looks exactly what I'm looking for. However I've not found out yet how to achieve this. Any (further) advice would be welcome.

Op system: Windows 10 Home
QCad: 3.28.1

I notice that I can attach a signature, which can be altered (& set up ?) via the UCP - What is the UCP and how do I find it ?

Thanks again.

One can pick a widget by its title bar with L-click and hold and drag it to a new position.
Then one can stack widgets when dragging it over another.
There is a kind of preview with a placeholder.
Dragging it rather near another title bar then it will be arranged in between widgets.
It is also possible to positioning it floating freely.

In a similar way one can drag a toolbar by the string of dots at the beginning.

Please use the proper forum for additional questions.
