What does the pen widget do?

there is a "pen" checkbox under View->Toolbars. It does not seem to do anything and I couldn't find anything in the documentation. What is it's purpose?

It shows / hides the pen toolbar which allows you to set the active pen when drawing entities. The pen toolbar is off by default. The pen (color, width, style) should always be determined by the layer the entity is on.
