changing prt preview scale causes grey background

If I change the print preview to a scale that is larger than the chosen paper size, the background turns all grey and the preview "paper block" is a tiny block way off to the side. How can I tell what will actually be printed at the modified preview scale?

1. change scale factor
2. zoom in on the paper to see the paper (e.g. using mouse wheel or zoom functions)
3. use left mouse button to position desired part on paper
