[SOLVED] Installing QCAD without loosing preferences

Post by Frank60 » Sat Dec 28, 2013 10:51 am

Hi,

for a while it wasn't necessary to uninstall previous versions or change folders, now this 'feature' is back again.

Very annoying as the user preferences used to be uninstalled too, meaning hours of work to restore user preferences.

Any special reason for this 'feature' ?

Yes, there is a reason: overwriting a previous version with a new one leads to a 'mix' of two versions, creating some serious problems (QCAD would not start anymore, crash, etc).

I wasn't aware that an uninstall removes your configuration file. That should not be the case and I will look into that.

For now, you can install new versions into a new, empty folder or backup your QCAD3.ini file before an update:

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\QCAD\QCAD3.ini

Windows Vista, Windows 7:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\QCAD\QCAD3.ini

I just tried to reproduce this problem here without any success. Uninstalling QCAD does not remove the configuration file here.

Can you briefly confirm that this is something that actually happened - or did you just assume / fear that uninstalling probably would reset your configuration? Thanks.

I tested this also with a German XP/32 System and I can confirm this statement. Maybe if you use an extern uninstall Program ...

But now I'm confused too:
@Andrew

Is the German configuration different - my QCAD3.ini is stored in the Folder QCAD - not Ripponsoft ....
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\User\Anwendungsdaten\QCAD

I found an old Sub-folder called Ripponsoft with an old QCAD.ini but this one is apparently abandoned since a long time ...
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\User\Anwendungsdaten\Ripponsoft

Thanks Husky, it's of course QCAD, not RibbonSoft (since version 3.1).

Thanks for the support.

I installed 3.4.5 without any problems.
