FS#2295 - Deselect all with Escape key

I’m used to have persistant selection while drawing (Application Preferences > Graphics View:Appearance > Selection), but I’m missing deselection of all objects with ESC key. I have seen the option to deselect with right key, but it’s nice to have right key for context menu.

Currently ESC key cancels current active command, but would be nice if there is no command active to also deselect all features by default.

Hi vedran,
I use the Esc/qq for stopping a command.
I usually need my last selection for something else.

Why not type 'TN'?

CVH

Hi,

there is no some big reason, but it's very practical and efficient.
I'll try to explain why I think it is better than TN combination:
1) it's because of (ACAD/my) habits (and possibly all other CAD users who are coming from ACAD and ACAD duplicates background which are used to this logic),
2) but more important is from practical reason - you don't have to look at keyboard to find an escape key - it's in the corner and you cannot ever type it wrong, but to find an TN combination might be prone to errors without looking at keyboard

But there is also an almost scientific explanation:
In this blog post, a guy logged commands by usage and you can see that CANCEL command is the most common command by far, and since by default in ACAD ESC key is used to run CANCEL command which cancels current command and deselects all when no command is active - it's obvious that CANCEL shortcut key should be easy and reachable key. I tested it myself and got similar results.

I have also seen an short documentary on YouTube about scientific calculation of best positioning of GUI elements and the solution was - the corners - they are most reachable locations with least errors when using it - it's same with ESC key. I'll put a link to that video if I find it.

I have currently found an workaround - I use key just below ESC key but it's not elegant, in my keyboard layout that key is mapped to "CEDILLA" symbol and problem with this is that it's activated every second time you press it
1) so I had to remappe this "CEDILLA" key to "PAUSE" key with PowerToys, because it's not activated every time you press it
2) I then added a keyboard shortcut to "PAUSE" for "Deselect all" function
