FS#770 - Polyline tool to delete segments between two nodes, leaving a gap

I guess this is a case of wording and wrong expectations.

The polyline tool “Delete Segments between two nodes” removes nodes, but not segments as the title and the icon suggests.

I propose to rename it to “Delete Nodes between two nodes”.

A tool which actually removes line segments from a polyline, leaving gaps, could indeed be useful to some users.

I think of a straight polyline with several segments. Then I remove some segments. I end up with a polyline with “holes” in it. Now I could stretch that polyline and all the remaining segments and holes stretch proportionally. Could be handy some times.

I guess this is a case of different understandings of the tool description here.

For me the word polyline or 'polygonal path' is a connected series of line segments:

The tool does indeed delete the segments between two nodes merging them into one segment in order to keep the polyline chain continuous. No gap is produced, if it were the polyline would then be two polylines!
A polyline needs to be exploded first in order to 'completely' remove a segment.

Your example of a polyline with holes in it would no longer be a 'continuous' polyline but separate line and /or polyline entities.

This is how I see it anyway - could be wrong ;)

I agree with you. A polyline is indeed an uninterrupted connection of line segments.

But the icon for this tool suggests deleting a segment and leaving a gap, and in this way creating two polylines which are not connected anymore.

Right now we have two tools which delete nodes in polylines:

1) "Delete Node(s) OD" –> deletes single nodes by clicking on each of them
2) "Delete Segment between two nodes OB" –> this actually is a "Remove multiple nodes in one go" tool. I suggest renaming it to reflect its function. That should prevent future misinterpretations.

Even more confusing is the the instruction text:
"delete first(second) node to delete"
These two nodes stay.
