Would it be possible to add a feature which turns selected text into solid fill hatched polylines?

That would make it possible to migrate the drawing from one computer system to another without having to worry whether the used font is installed on both systems, like when sending a drawing to a manufacturer for laser engraving.

Right now I can do it by hand, letter by letter, and that is a rather labour-intensive task.

My system: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz and 8 GB of RAM and NVIDIA GT218 (GeForce 210)

For a normal drawing displaying it in all detail is a good thing and the performance of my quad-core system is more than adequate.

But I discovered (or rather experienced) that when putting a large collection of individual drawings of gears onto one big sheet (960 mm x 600 mm - preparation for laser cutting), the performance was so bad that I had to wait several seconds (>10 sec) for each step in the process of arranging all the parts on the layer.

Request: It would be a big help and performance booster if you could disable the detailed view of each part/layer and only draw a rectangle to visualize the outline of the part.

Please take this in consideration. Attached you find an example of how that could look like. (Actually when pasting a drawing from the clipboard you already do that.)

If I work in QCAD only with Toolbars (and not with the “Cad Tools” there is nowhere a Button to find for “Create Block from selection”.
If I have to create a Block based on a selection I have to work with the Menu or have to activate the Cad Tools.

But, if I look at the Blocklist menu there is a function (+) to add an empty Block. It would be nice to have this button working for both situation - empty Block or depending on a selection to “Create Block from selection”.

Or alternative an additional Button ...

Anyway - in my opinion would that make the “Blocklist” complete.

I guess this is a case of wording and wrong expectations.

The polyline tool “Delete Segments between two nodes” removes nodes, but not segments as the title and the icon suggests.

I propose to rename it to “Delete Nodes between two nodes”.

A tool which actually removes line segments from a polyline, leaving gaps, could indeed be useful to some users.

I think of a straight polyline with several segments. Then I remove some segments. I end up with a polyline with “holes” in it. Now I could stretch that polyline and all the remaining segments and holes stretch proportionally. Could be handy some times.

Sometimes you end up with a straight line which is broken/split into several parts. It would be great to have a tool to merge/combine these segments into one.

That would be the opposite/complementary tool to the “Split Entities” tool.

When using the Lengthen/Shorten tool it would be good to have an additional option to be able to pick a point to lengthen or shorten to.

To re-introduce Tile and Cascade window options like as before in QCAD 2.2.2.

Feature request- text string find/replace

Scope: entire drawing/selected objects set/chosenlayer only

Functionality:

‘find’ with ‘zoom to’, first, next, previous, last

‘replace’ with ‘next’, ‘undo’, ‘all’

This functionality is very useful when using QCad for system diagrams and the like.

Some times I need to have the dimension info using the Vertical Dimension tool displayed horizontally.

Possibly this option could be added to the Label drop down menu.

To have the option to set your own ‘user defined’ line weight.

Duplicate (copy, clone) a layer with or without entities on it. New name can be specified by user.

To add the option to ‘print only’ selected area in a drawing.

To add another Arc tool option in Arc tools set:

1.Specify Start point for Arc.
2.Specify End point for Arc.
3.Specify “Tangent” direction (without being restricted in input field) so you can visually select a point on your desired Tangent line!

The method Polyline from Segments (OC) can be configured for tolerance and simplification in the Options Toolbar.
The method Polyline from Selection (OG) has no UI or none showing.

OG retrieves a tolerance from QCAD.ini, what is initially not set:

    var tolerance = RSettings.getDoubleValue("PolylineFromSelection/Tolerance", 0.001);

The tolerance will be default = 0.001 similar as the default in AppPrefs.
The tolerance setting is included in QCAD.ini after changing the AppPrefs entry.

OG calls PolylineFromSelection.autoJoinSegments with this tolerance:

    var counter = PolylineFromSelection.autoJoinSegments(di, tolerance, this);

PolylineFromSelection.autoJoinSegments calls PolylineFromSegments.createPolylineShape
with simplification hard coded to true. (last parameter)

I like to start my CAM paths at low curvature instead starting at high curvature.
Ellipses may explode with the startpoint at the tip. (file Y2)

No example file provided because these NaN values are not saved to a file.
More pronounced with lines as with arcs.
Less pronounced when recombining after an explosion.

Can also occur when adding segments to an existing polyline with OC.

Arctic_Eddie reports failing CAM offset at exactly these points !!!
Reported is a faulty arc with radius of over 360,000mm.
- I can not reproduce this under QCAD working further on the Polys with NaNs.
- However the direct offset of such controlpoint Splines is erroneous.
(see file in post 30902)

Arctic_Eddie reports arc radii of over 10,000mm.
- These don’t seem to be faulty.
- I agree that BiArc fitting should be bound to a lower and certainly to an upper limit.
- That should be huge otherwise faint curvature is represented by many
wobbles or too quick by straight lines.

Polyline arcs with Width = 2R render as circle segments rather than circle sectors.
As Non-reversed arcs these don’t explode.
As reversed arc these explode to a single arc rather than a circle sector contour.

There is also still the faulty rendering with Z not zero

The conditional clause of this sentence is ‘the odd choice’.
Blaming this on incompetence.
Insight is the best way to get better ...
... but the rest is more an odd choice of tools for this kind of task ...

Again, the MISTAKE was by accident, not intended, in a flick of the wrist ...
I didn’t change the trimming method, I simply forgot to ... only once.

The ‘undo’ of my incompetent MISTAKE didn’t returned to how the situation was before I erroneous trimmed with TM.
I was simply undoing my erroneous action.

Documented it in 4 quadrants.
For this, 4 times on purpose, and not as a consistent ‘odd choice’.

Looks like error, but may be that’s feature request.

CAD software uses typical navigation behavior as:
Wheel = Zoom; Ctrl+Wheel = Scroll up/down; Shift+Wheel = Scroll left/right.

Any other software like browsers, office software (openoffice writer, ms excel and so on), 2d paint software like GIMP (Photoshop and so on) uses other behavior:
Wheel = Scroll up/down; Ctrl+Wheel = Zoom; Shift+Wheel = Scroll left/right.

Users, that intensively use CAD and other software simultaneously prefer to make same behavior in their applications switching CAD scroll to plain mouse wheel.

QCAD’s “Application Preferences”: “Graphics View: Navigation”: “Mouse wheel/ two finger swipe”: “Scroll” allow user to assign scroll up/down to wheel mouse instead of Zoom. But there is mistake Ctrl+Wheel didn’t change to Zoom. Ctrl+Wheel continues to scroll up/down, as the wheel.
Wheel = Scroll up/down; Ctrl+Wheel = Scroll up/down; Shift+Wheel = Scroll left/right. No zoom!

Draw manipulation at this mode like a hell: you need to use wheel in conjunction with Ctrl/Shift to point draw in desired position, than move your hand to +(-) for make desired zoom.

Summary: Block zoomstate supersedes Model_Space after Undo of BC

PS: 3th trial to enter a suggestion ...

I find myself with reasonable regularity needing to change the background color between black and white. It would be much more efficient to have a toggle button on the ribbon to make this sort of instant (kind of like the “screen based line types” button works but make it for background color and just between black and white or let people define their dark and light themes and toggle the background between the two.

When I’m drawing inside a layout block the offset tool picks up lines from blocks that are hidden.
It is not happening with all the block.

“Paste” has already the options: To current layer, Overwrite layers, Overwrite blocks.

Would be a nice time saver to have the same options for “Paste along Entity” too.

It may be useful to insert the “image cropping” function both in top / bottom - right / left mode, and with polyline

So far, layer status has only been implemented very rudimentarily.
I wish something like a dialog box in which you can choose for each layer status, which layers belong to it and which not.

Offsetting 32 polys from ellipses fails.
Offsetting 16 polys can be completed with 2 selections for outer and 2 for inner.

For some reason the offset function halts premature.

When working with multiple Viewports with different scale it could be very useful to have extra properties controlling how dimensions are rendered in the viewport:

1)
E.g an extra “Dimension Scale” under “Scale” in the Viewport selection’s ‘Specific Properties’ section, could allow having the same size when printed.
This Dimension Scale would be multiplied on top of the Scale value, but only for Dimensions rendering.

2)
Toggle button for hiding any dimensions in the Viewport. Maybe this should be controlled by being able to specify a Layer that should be hidden in this Viewport only, then I could select my Dimensions layer here.

This is a trim method I am missing in Qcad.

20 years ago it existed in CadKey.
You had a bunch of lines or segments.
You defined a (new) line or segment as cutter.
‘Trim All’.
You pointed at the side of the cutter entity to trim all intersecting at that side.

Only in rare cases I can use Husky’s workaround as pro.
It all depends on what else is in the clipping rectangle that is needed to trim all intended.
If of no use all single crossing entities have to be chosen one by one.

Some functions / methods can generate some sort off entity or part with NaN / Null / Null-lenght ... props.
Some explicitly don’t and test their actions with isNull().

As these serve a purpose in some processes, trails of them can be part of the results.
For some users Null / Null-lenght are meaningfull, for other users these produce errors down the line.
In a few cases its a desirable feature eg. controlpoint spline.
(Allthough there are no Null props involved with equal successively controlpoints)

Many problem post on the forum are related to Null - Zero and so on.

In some cases it can’t be undone by re-editing the drawing.

In some cases there is a difference noticed after file save-close-open.

Just starting with QCAD, for some hours now - really excellent user interface (compared to other low budget CADs, like DCAD, or BeckerCAD...) !

Surprisingly, point coordinates - entered via the command line, and shown with correct positions on the drawing- are not displayed correctly with the ‘dimordinate’ (DO) command.
There are no negative values, even when the center point (0;0) is right in the middle of the drawing, so points left and below should have !

The Arc segments of Polylines with Global or any Local Width render faulty where Global Z or any of the arc’s local Z is not zero.

In the attached drawing setting the Global Z of the inner poly to 5,10,...

The setting of Z to not zero affects the radius of the projected arc and not the bulging of the poly.
It also affects the projected widths of the line inversely, but not by changing the widths properties.

Pritty rare combination! True.
Qcad is 2D native! True.

Flatten will resolve this.

It is not a purely visual rendering fault, the poly will explode as such.

Maybe similar flaw as with uneven scaling blocks with arcs.

Hi!

A friendly request to add an option to disable hatch rendering on “dwg2bmp” conversions.

Depending on the nature of the conversion and the density of the hatch, this may render unintelligible images (see attachments). The option could look like “-t, -nohatch” to indicate hatches should be hidden before rendering. This could potentially become an option too for “dwg2svg” or “dwg2pdf.”

There is the Synchronize attributes feature which works well. But It affects only block references in the active layout(modelspace, block layout). If I want to synchronize attributes of block references in in another blocks, i have to manually go through all blocks and run synchronize attributes feature. That is the reason I would like to modify Synchronize attributes feature to affect all block references in a drawing, or add new Deep synchronize attributes feature.

Hi Andrew,

we know that you need to have always software performance in your mind to decide which features / tools can / should be implemented and on which way.

I really appreciate your effort to find the best middle way between software features and performance but I think also it’s a tough call to appraise worldwide the overall customer equipment to make the software workable to the best for everybody. That isn’t possible without compromise.

Maybe it would make sense to think about a new dialog in the “Application Preferences” to let the user decide what kind of feature are absolutely needed regarding to his/her work-task / equipment. I don’t mean that you need to cover every single thing but the main “performance jeopardy’s” should be covered with an on/off switch.

Yes I know - that isn’t done in 5 minutes but I think that can make your life easier in the long run and will cover even more customer.

Just my two cents. ;)

Currently the only option to insert a viewport is using the central insertion point, for better placement it would be useful to have an option to insert viewports at any of the four corners in addition to the centre.

When dimensioning my drawings I always want the dimensions to be on the dimensions layer.
When adding text I want the text to be on the text layer.
When drawing an infinite line it is always a construction line, therefore I want it to be on the construction line layer.
When drawing a line segment it almost always is on my outline layer.

So I propose a new option to bind certain actions to certain layers.
Whenever those actions are selected the layer should automatically be switched.

I can imagine this being implemented in the General→Tool Settings menu, where the short cuts are defined.
