I think it would be useful to add a note to the Application preferences dialog window, to explain to the user the difference between ‘Application and Drawing’ preferences and how it effects drawings in QCAD.

Add support for
- tolerance display (dimtol)
- upper limit (dimtp)
- lower limit (dimtm)
- tolerance precision (dimtdec)
- tolerance text size factor (dimtfac)
- tolerance suppress zeros, etc.

E.g. 0 degrees at the top, clock-wise for positive direction, alternative angle units.

Support for external references (XREF)

Many constructions refer to a basis of elements, which stay constant in all follow-ups. As an example there is a floorplan and I would like to create different variations of room layout (e.g. A and B). In my example the basis consists of 30 layers an each variation needs 10 further ones. At last there are 50 different layers in my drawing. Designing layout A needs layer 1 to 30 (basis) and 31 to 40 (A) to be shown, but 41 to 50 (B) must be invisible. Now I modify Var.B which makes me to single click the visibility of 31 to 40 (A) to be not shown and 41 to 50 (B) to be shown. You’ve got it?

It would be great help, to save the set of all shown layers by an individual name in a pulldown-menu. Visibility of my variations could be chosen by userdefined “set of layers”, e.g. “Var-A”, “Var-B” and “Var-A_but_different”. In this way I pick just one set-name in my pulldown-list instead of marking and demarking between countless layers.

In my opinion this tool would be a small aspect in QCad but a giant leap for user-pleasentness

I think it’s a useful adition and makes it easy to select objects that are overlapped. I know there is a selection filter, but sometimes this is faster and/or all the objects share the same type and such things.

If I remember correctly, Inkscape has this behaviour.

The Omega button to insert special characters is only available in rich text mode.
Make it available in simple text mode as well.

Add support for automatic text line wrapping for multiline text entities.

To add the option to ‘print only’ selected area in a drawing.

It might be useful for some to have the option to turn on/off ' auto’ dimension tracking option.

To re-introduce Tile and Cascade window options like as before in QCAD 2.2.2.

Because modifying hatches have lag issues I’d like to propose a toggle that turns of the redrawing/rendering of the hatch. Especially while modifying the hatch.

The hatches always have a boundary that can be worked with right? So when we move or stretch the hatch we can still see the boundary and its handles to perform all the actions.

This could be a new view mode that turns of the view of the interior/pattern of the hatch but leave the boundary of the hatch.
Or the draft mode can be extended to include simplified hatches while modifying.

Eine oft Hilfreiche Zeit/Klick sparende Erweiterung wäre eine “Total” Option bei dem “Lengthen” Tool.

Aktuell ist es mit dieser Funktion möglich ein Element zu verlängern oder zu verkürzen um den Amount X. Der Referenzpunkt (von welchem Ende) kann bestimmt werden.

Die Erweiterung die ich mir wünschen würde wäre auch ein “Total” um ein Element auf eine bestimmte Länge zu bringen ohne einen Taschenrechner benutzen zu müssen. Referenz (welches Ende oder Mitte) sollte (muss) dafür wählbar sein.

Die Funktion “Property editor” stellt bereits über die Geometry Eigenschaften die Möglichkeit zur Verfügung einen “Total” Wert zu manipulieren. Leider bin ich aber hierbei nicht in der Lage zu bestimmen welcher Element Referenzpunkt dafür benutzt werden soll. Könnte ich die Referenz wählen (welches Ende oder Mitte) wäre auch dies dann durchaus akzeptabel

A request for adding some fields to the toolpath

This is a trim method I am missing in Qcad.

20 years ago it existed in CadKey.
You had a bunch of lines or segments.
You defined a (new) line or segment as cutter.
‘Trim All’.
You pointed at the side of the cutter entity to trim all intersecting at that side.

Only in rare cases I can use Husky’s workaround as pro.
It all depends on what else is in the clipping rectangle that is needed to trim all intended.
If of no use all single crossing entities have to be chosen one by one.

Would it be possible to add a feature which turns selected text into solid fill hatched polylines?

That would make it possible to migrate the drawing from one computer system to another without having to worry whether the used font is installed on both systems, like when sending a drawing to a manufacturer for laser engraving.

Right now I can do it by hand, letter by letter, and that is a rather labour-intensive task.

My system: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz and 8 GB of RAM and NVIDIA GT218 (GeForce 210)

For a normal drawing displaying it in all detail is a good thing and the performance of my quad-core system is more than adequate.

But I discovered (or rather experienced) that when putting a large collection of individual drawings of gears onto one big sheet (960 mm x 600 mm - preparation for laser cutting), the performance was so bad that I had to wait several seconds (>10 sec) for each step in the process of arranging all the parts on the layer.

Request: It would be a big help and performance booster if you could disable the detailed view of each part/layer and only draw a rectangle to visualize the outline of the part.

Please take this in consideration. Attached you find an example of how that could look like. (Actually when pasting a drawing from the clipboard you already do that.)

Feature request - to have an option to underline text.

E.g. use Millimeters for construction while dimensions are displayed in Meters.

If there is no selection the Properties Editor could be used to predefine the properties of to be drawn elements.

this is a usability feature request:

If you want to move an object relatively to any point (e.g. by entering @x;y in commandline) it does’nt make sense to enter a starting reference point. Of course this is possible by clicking to any location on the screen. But it’s difficult to change between mouse and keyboard so often.

It should be possible to enter a “don’t care” or “any” reference point by pressing a keyboard shortcut (e.g. enter like in AutoCAD).

When working with multiple Viewports with different scale it could be very useful to have extra properties controlling how dimensions are rendered in the viewport:

1)
E.g an extra “Dimension Scale” under “Scale” in the Viewport selection’s ‘Specific Properties’ section, could allow having the same size when printed.
This Dimension Scale would be multiplied on top of the Scale value, but only for Dimensions rendering.

2)
Toggle button for hiding any dimensions in the Viewport. Maybe this should be controlled by being able to specify a Layer that should be hidden in this Viewport only, then I could select my Dimensions layer here.

1. The Scrollbars for each window in the Viewports has the same size like the normal used scrollbars for windows. If you are working on a normal size Monitor it “steals” a lot of “working space”. Is there any possibility to make the scrollbars smaller or just a line to separate the windows so that I have to navigate with Keyboard and mouse?

2. I thing the Viewports and the View List belongs together - is it possible to get a button in the “View List / Tool Bar” to choose a Viewport style instead of “walking” the long way over the “Drawing preferences” Menu?

QGroupBox widgets with <property name=”checkable”> are not saved in Qcad3.conf

Add parameters to the function DL_Dxf::writeVPort.
This way users will be able to specify the desired viewport.

Is the github the official repository? Are pull requests sent there accepted?

It would be nice to be able to adjust the zoom factor so that the scale on the screen matches a ruler which I lay on the screen.

Zooming in and out is lagging to the point of unusable. This is happening in a layout block with the cursor pointing inside geometry with hatches. When the cursor is pointing outside the geometry zooming works as expected.
The attached file has a very simplified testcase that shows this problem almost in the same way as a more complex drawing with multiple layers and hatches.

edit: I also attached the more complex drawing because it is a bit unclear to me where the lagging stops. Outside the viewport or outside the paper.

I just noticed the selection box has the same problem!

Openning a big file or doing any action in it, takes minutes to load.
Even dragging the scrollbar slightly left or right, takes mintues to redraw the canvas again, which makes QCAD un-usable for professional use.
Is there a way to make QCAD usable, after loading completed:
- Like suppressing edit until user says so,
- or taking snapshots of rendered canvases to another file and use it, as windows uses thumb.db ( for negative latency :P )

PS: I wish I could help a bit, but my hand are tied. I am just a java freak, I am opt to any idea of porting it to java, if she is still alive.

Improving the performance of the exceptional use of the processors when switching from the model to the paper space (testing with the attached file) the functionalities of the commands for the viewports are too low in the paper space.

Slow loading of drawing with huge number of block inserts (more than 10000).

Hi Andrew,

we know that you need to have always software performance in your mind to decide which features / tools can / should be implemented and on which way.

I really appreciate your effort to find the best middle way between software features and performance but I think also it’s a tough call to appraise worldwide the overall customer equipment to make the software workable to the best for everybody. That isn’t possible without compromise.

Maybe it would make sense to think about a new dialog in the “Application Preferences” to let the user decide what kind of feature are absolutely needed regarding to his/her work-task / equipment. I don’t mean that you need to cover every single thing but the main “performance jeopardy’s” should be covered with an on/off switch.

Yes I know - that isn’t done in 5 minutes but I think that can make your life easier in the long run and will cover even more customer.

Just my two cents. ;)

Would not it be possible to create a kind of template for printing?
We draw our room without cartridge. The cartridge will automatically appear when printed. The scaling could be automatic so that it goes in the A4 and therefore also will post the scale automatically. The name of the play could be the file name, date last saved after it the rest of the information that would be to add somehow (material index, designer, ...).

CAD software uses typical navigation behavior as:
Wheel = Zoom; Ctrl+Wheel = Scroll up/down; Shift+Wheel = Scroll left/right.

Any other software like browsers, office software (openoffice writer, ms excel and so on), 2d paint software like GIMP (Photoshop and so on) uses other behavior:
Wheel = Scroll up/down; Ctrl+Wheel = Zoom; Shift+Wheel = Scroll left/right.

Users, that intensively use CAD and other software simultaneously prefer to make same behavior in their applications switching CAD scroll to plain mouse wheel.

QCAD’s “Application Preferences”: “Graphics View: Navigation”: “Mouse wheel/ two finger swipe”: “Scroll” allow user to assign scroll up/down to wheel mouse instead of Zoom. But there is mistake Ctrl+Wheel didn’t change to Zoom. Ctrl+Wheel continues to scroll up/down, as the wheel.
Wheel = Scroll up/down; Ctrl+Wheel = Scroll up/down; Shift+Wheel = Scroll left/right. No zoom!

Draw manipulation at this mode like a hell: you need to use wheel in conjunction with Ctrl/Shift to point draw in desired position, than move your hand to +(-) for make desired zoom.

I love using the context menu, speeding up my workflow indeed.

I would like to suggest that we have the added option to show only icons if desired and also that maybe an option to save and show commonly used tools!

Maybe the context menu could be configurable to show two columns, one for the normal last used tools and the othjer one for the user saved tools?

What do you think?

Two useful commands make it necessary to
