Answered my own question. Here are the EXPLICIT steps

To copy and paste one or more "things" do the following: 1) suggest you Deselect everything (Select -> Deselect All) 2) from the left menu, choose one of the selection tools, for example, Select Entities 3) select one (or more) things 4) press the Copy icon on the toolbar (or press CTRL-C) 5) QCad n...

Not a very helpful reply. English *is* my native language and I've used CAD programs for years but I can't get the Copy/Paste to work right either. I've tried selecting first, then pressing the Copy (or using CTRL-C). Nothing happens (OK, so it shouldn't be obvious that it's on the clipboard). Then ...

First day at it myself, but the answer(s) are:

1) to save a drawing as a PDF, use the File -> Export command, and select PDF from the drop-down box. Enter an appropriate name, and you're done

2) you cannot import from a PDF, near as I can tell. You'd have to get a DWG or other CAD-editable file
