Hotkeys: modify or create my own?

Do you have a question you want to ask an existing QCAD user about QCAD and what you can do with it? Do you want to know if a particular feature exists? This is the place to ask.

Hotkeys: modify or create my own?

Post by Slartyb7 » Wed Jan 20, 2021 8:03 pm

Is it possible to modify the existing hotkeys and/or create my own?
I would love to create a list of ONE and TWO keystroke commands.

Thank you,

Dave

Yes, you can modify shortcuts under:
Edit > Application Preferences > General > Tool Settings

Choose a tool from the list and set the shortcut under Shortcuts.

Note that naturally one-letter shortcuts will conflict with two letter shortcuts starting with the same letter. For example if you define "A" to auto zoom you will loose "A3" for an arc with three points, etc.

You can find a list of all default shortcuts of QCAD at:
https://qcad.org/archives/shortcuts/shortcuts_en.pdf

Thank you, Andrew for the prompt reply.

I look forward to getting familiar with QCAD. It certainly seems to be everything I want/need in a 2D CAD product.

Is there some other avenue, besides Hotkeys, to create user-defined command shortcuts? (A way around the problem you point out of any one-letter hotkey will make null and void any two-letter hotkey beginning with the same key.)

BTW, I will be using QCAD for designing personal woodshop projects as well as parts for my Radio Controlled Airplane hobby.

Thanks again for the quick reply,

Dave

The recommended way forward is to get familiar with those existing two letter shortcuts. They are quick to type and most are easy to remember (LI for line, CI for circle, CR for circle with given radius, etc.). There are simply way to few letters in the alphabet to be able to afford single letter shortcuts.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you, yes, I agree that I now need to become familiar with the available shortcuts. I have purchased the Pro version and will be diving in in the days ahead. I have printed out the 3-page document showing all of the available hotkeys.

In the short time I have spent with QCAD, I can see that it is a powerful tool at a remarkable pricepoint. Thank you SO MUCH for that. Please don't take my questions as any sort of criticism. They are not. I'm an old dude who spent a lot of years using one of "those other programs" and was looking for a way to shorten my learning time. If I could create command shortcuts like those I have used in the past, well, quicker learning for me!

An example of the shortcuts I used to use (in my past career), was:
z = zoom
zz = precious zoom
zzz = zoom out to show all

I liked to create either 1-key commands, or multiple strokes of the same key. That minimizes the amount I needed to glance at the keyboard. If I understand your last response, QCAD will take the first "z" and run with it!

Again, I am NOT criticizing. This is an AWESOME product. I look forward to getting intimate with it!

Thanks again,

Dave

Chris,

For all OS see menu Edit > Application Preferences > General > Tool Settings.
These and about all preferences and options are saved in QCAD.ini/config.

CVH
