Selecting new tools

Sometimes when I select a new tool without cancelling the previous one, the input fields of several tools become visible without any apparent logic.
Shouldn't selecting a new tool automatically cancel the old one? It would also be nice, if when selecting a new tool, keyboard focus would automatically go to the first (or only) value input field of the respective tool. And selecting a new tool with a keyboard shortcut when focus is in the numerical input field of a tool, should still select the new tool instead of inputting the letters in the input field (ex. "li" for line tool).
