Intermittent/broken/segmented arc

Post by HJvL » Mon Jan 21, 2019 5:41 pm

Hi all

I need to draw an arc with a radius of 200, and a broken line type (mechanical so I have reference points, not just a layer line style). It needs to draw a line for 5mm, then draw no line for 12mm, then draw a line again, all along this 200mm radius arc.

I want to combine it with a larger, concentric arc for a toothed effect (it's to hold some parts as part of a larger assembly), and the broken segment dimension is critical. Is there a way to do this in QCAD?

I'm using version 3.20.3 on Windows.

Thanks!

... and the broken segment dimension is critical.
There are many ways to accomplish that but with this note I choose to:

create an arc with 200 mm radius,
select the arc and adjust the length within the property manager to 5 mm,
next step - we need an aid arc,
use the Rotate tool to rotate and copy (1 time) the arc, Reference point of the rotation = center arc,
choose the options "Keep original" and define the angle with "Define angle using mouse cursor",
use the start end of the arc to place the copy on the opposite end of the arc,
now select the copy - adjust the lengths within the Property Manager to 12 mm,
select the first arc, launch the rotate tool, fill in how many copies you need and define the rotation angle again with the mouse cursor what means the start is the start point of the 5 mm arc and the endpoint is the end of the 12 mm aid arc.
delete the aid arc ................... done.

Great, thanks! I'll have a go and see what I can come up with.

OK, this is how I did it in the end:

1. Draw your reference. I used two perpendicular >200mm lines.
2. Draw an arc between these with a 200mm radius.
3. Use the Properties Editor panel to change its length to 5mm.
4. Draw another arc from the end of the first one, finishing where your first arc finished.
5. Change the length of the second arc to 12mm.
6. Select both arcs, and rotate around the intersection of the perpendicular reference lines. Use the start of your arcs as the start of rotation, and snap it to the end of the same two arcs. If you use the Multiple Copies option you can extend it as far as you want.
7. Delete your reference lines.
8. Delete the 12mm arcs.
