problem installing Pro version on new Linux Laptop [Solved}

Post by Ironfighter » Sat Jun 26, 2021 7:10 am

I am trying to install on a new laptop but have run into a problem.
I download the 64 bit "run" file, transferred it to my /opt folder, made it executable, double clicked it and nothing happened. after numerous attempts I downloaded the Tar file, moved it to the opt folder, made the qcad file executable (and the qcad-bin file). Double clicked and nothing happened. I went on the MX forum seeking advice thinking it was an operating system issue (which for all I know it may be).
I was told to run the command ./qcad from a terminal opened in the qcad folder -/opt/qcad-3.26.4-pro-linux-x86_64/
Programme opened up instantly but will not open if I double click the file.
No desktop icon though so does this mean it hasn't been installed. Nothing in the MX menu either.
Any help and advice would greatly appreciated.

You'll have to run the downloaded installer (not attempt to open it).

For detailed installation instructions for Linux, please refer to:

Thanks for your response Andrew. I did try to follow the instructions in your link when I first downloaded the “installer” file - as I said I made numerous attempt before I reverted to downloading and extracting the Tar file.

It seems I have gone wrong somewhere towards the end of the proceedings because I never got to the “do you want to run” pop up.

I think the best thing for me to do is delete all the existing files in my opt and download folders and start again by downloading the installer again and following the instructions.

I won’t be able to do this till Monday AEST but will post an update.

Just one question before I do that. In this installation of MX Linux it seems the opt folder is owned by root. Could that have something to do with my difficulties?

QCAD installs into the opt folder of the user who installs it. For example /home/yourname/opt/qcad...

I had actually followed the steps in the link you provided Andrew but I found the solution to my failure to run the installer by looking at the details of the file on my old laptop. My new MX Linux laptop wanted to "open with" XFCE terminal. My old laptop opens the file with Terminal Emulator. I just change the "open with" box selection to Terminal Emulator and it installed the file into my home/user/opt directory without any problems

Thanks for you help.
