Equally spaced points along a curved line?

I need to lay out a large number (more than 80) points along an irregular closed line. The points must be equally spaced.
I have spent a long time trying to figure out how to do this. Can anybody help me?
Thank you!

If you already know the spacing that you want, you can use a series of equal circles, snapping to the intersection of each circle with the spline in turn. Get rid of the circles later when you no longer need them.
If you are trying to divide a spline curve into a given number of equal segments, I don't know the answer, except by trial and error with the above method, changing the circle radius until you get a spacing that's near enough to exact for your purposes, which could be tedious. For 80 points, you could try with, say, 10 or 20, at first, but this won't work, obviously for a prime no of points.
