It would be nice if one could not only change the icon size of the widget panel but also the icon size of the tool bars.

I'd like to vote for this too. The icons in the toolbars take up a lot of space.
For now, another style might help:
./qcad -style plastique
(or windows, cde, cleanlooks)
Not sure about Linux but it reduces the icon size under Mac OS X a lot.
